Officials Update #1
Hopefully you have hit the ground running during this first week of competition - last nights' B meets under our belt and getting ready for tomorrows' A meets. And (no surprise) I've already had a question posed that would be useful for all to understand.
As you may recall from training, we discussed coverage/jurisdiction during the Medley Relays where additional officials are required because of the stroke judging and the relay take-offs. Priority for the Stroke & Turn officials are to judge the strokes during the relays - the Starter/Referee will be responsible for calling disqualifications for early take-offs if there are no additional officials available to help; the starter would be responsible for observing the take-offs at the "start" end and disqualifying those teams with blatant early take-offs.
It is strongly suggested that the second-half stroke & turn officials (if available) or a responsible parent(s) help with the take-offs to allow the Stroke & Turn judges to concentrate on the strokes. This would require 3 additional folks on the 100 relays (2 relay take-off judges at the "shallow" end and one at the "start" end to pair with the starter) and only 1 additional person to help out on the 200 Medley Relays.
